Dreaming of New Year's Eve...

I cannot believe we are already heading into 2013!  I have spent the last week unwinding, finding my footing in my new routine, and recovering from the holiday.  I couldn't help dreaming of all the fantastic New Year's Eve celebrations that I will not be hosting this year.  I feel like after having the family for Christmas the last thing I want is another party to clean up.  So... I won't!  Oh well, a girl can still daydream!

If I were to throw a party here is what I envision...

Smart Gloves with Lace :: A DIY Project

The weather has been ridiculously cold here and needing to use my phone constantly, to stay connected with work, was proving troublesome to my frost bitten fingers.  While chatting with Tookie I mentioned this woe and she simply replied "you need some mittens".  Yes, yes I do.  Here is the DIY for my "Smart Gloves".

What you will need:

Gloves
Soft thin lace
Transparent thread
Needle
Scissors

Directions:

Start by turning your gloves inside out
Using the thumb and index finger, as an outline, cut out lace
Hand sew your lace pieces into the glove seam of finger tips
Turn the gloves back out
Take your scissors and make a small hole in the tips where the lace will show.  Be very careful to not cut your lace inserts.
Once the small hole is cut you can continue cutting out the glove, over the lace, until only the lace shows.

Now you have smart phone ready hand wear for those chilly days!  I even tried these on protective cases, such as Otter Boxes, and they work perfectly!  Enjoy!

Hunting with Remington

The lengths of time between storms has been pretty unpredictable on The Thousand Acre Woods.  Everything is lush, green, and just begging to be explored from all the rain we've been receiving in abundance.   Most days are blanketed with a thick layer of fog and when it does clear the open sky brings a wicked chill.

We woke up to a morning, just like this, a couple days ago.  When I pulled the drapes open there wasn't much to be seen through the ivory haze of morning and back shut they went.  Come about noon I noticed a tiny glimmer of light streaming in beneath the hanging panels and realized the sun was out.  So we followed suit!

We are the proud owners of a pretty curious bunch of pets who are all eager to join in on any scouting missions.  I try to make an effort to take each one out individually, dedicating my time to only that fur baby.  It was REM's day, well, more like hour.  I love how genuinely interested he seems by everything we find.  There was only an hour of sun before the downpour ensued, but we enjoyed every moment hunting for mushrooms and other natural treasures.   How I love my little adventure kitty.

Corn Chowder Recipe

This is my all time favorite recipe and usually the only thing I request from my Mom for birthday dinners.

What you will need:

8 ounces bacon, chopped
1/2 Pound Italian Sausage
4 large chopped sweet onions
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 teaspoon ground turmeric
12 cups chicken stock
2 lbs red potatoes
3 pounds frozen corn
2 cups half & half

Directions:

First you will need to cook bacon until crispy, about 5 minutes.  Remove from pan but do not discard pan as you will still need it
Uncase your sausage and roll into small meatballs and cook in your bacon pan
Remove sausage and in the same pan add the onions and butter cooking at medium heat for 10 minutes, until the onions are translucent.
Stir in the flour, salt, pepper, and turmeric and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
Empty your pan into a large stock pot and add the chicken stock and potatoes bringing contents to a boil.
Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes, until the potatoes are tender.
Add the corn, sausage, and bacon to the soup, then add the half-and-half.
Reduce to a low heat and allow 10 minutes before serving.

Enjoy!

Christmas Cards

I think everyone has holiday traditions they hold dear.  Some have been passed down from generation to generation while others begin with the start of a new family.   Christopher Robin and I do not have much by means of our own traditions yet, but one thing we do cherish amongst ourselves is writing and mailing our Christmas cards.  There is something so perfectly festive about snacking on cookies, made  from heart by those you love, while sending that love back to them in the form of a gleeful greeting.   We find it a brilliantly cliche way to welcome the holiday.

Do you have a favorite holiday tradition?

Decorating Our Rustic Christmas Tree

I love pulling out the Christmas boxes and unwrapping each little treasure to hang on the tree.  I forget all the little details of each one and all the personality they hold.  Of course, our tree has a very rustic vibe covered with everything from bears to pinecones which I just adore!  Two times this week I have fallen asleep on the couch while basking in its holiday glow.   Drifted off while just taking in it's simple serenity and calming scent.  I never want our tree to leave and wish it could remain in front of our window forever with it's perfectly paired decor.  Do you match your tree to your house?  Does it have a certain theme?

When I redesigned my blog this time around I knew I wanted to incorporate some bits and pieces of watercolor.  There is something I find so peaceful about the whimsical brushstrokes and pale make up of watercolor.  I have been happily browsing all the stunning works throughout the week.

Anything, other than holiday preparations, you've all been manic for?
