Yesterday was my great grandmother, Evelyn's, service.  It was beautiful and full of warm memories as well as a few reminiscent tears. On our way home from our celebratory reception --at what was my great grandmother's place of choice for lunch-- we found it only appropriate to stop by the Gertrude School on our way home.

The Gertrude School was established in the 1800's and is now home to an art gallery but back in it's prime it held a lot of memories for the elders of our family.   Not only was it the school my great grandmother attended as an adolescent, it was the place where she would meet and begin her amazing life's journey with my great grandfather Percy.  They would be married for 66 years at the time of his passing and they would celebrate every moment.  They were ranchers, dancers, and care givers to anyone in need.  They were amazing people with such rich tales of life.  It was such a small, but delightful treat to wander the empty grounds imagining a young Percy and Evelyn's youthful presence here.

It was a bit hard not to feel jealous of each old board and the stories they must hold.  To not envy the ancient oak limbs and the memories that continue to thrive within their inner rings.

In the end, I found it uplifting to imagining myself dancing around the school house as they must have so many years ago and soothing to know their legacy would continue to hold fast on this small piece of earth.

I'd like to think that they are together now... dancing in each other's arms... once again.

Farmer's Market...

This week's Farmers Market had to be one of the best to date!  It was packed with the most tasty of treats from fresh cherry tomatoes to lavender truffles.  We even scored ourselves a couple amazing zucchini muffins and promised to return for a jar of carrot cake jam!  Yum!  No better way to empty your wallet than walking from booth to booth filling your bag with goodies!

Calling for rain...

This summer has been a harsh one on The Thousand Acre Woods.  Summer sprinkles have been nonexistent leaving the land parched and brittle.  As we prepare for the autumn season to approach we find that we are praying for rain in fear of the risk of wildfires consuming our land.  Looking back I find it all the more concerning...

It is amazing how just a couple rainless months can have such a huge impact on the earth around us.  Here is hoping this dry ground is soon to be a thing of the past.

For My Grandma...

Yesterday my Great Grandmother passed away in her home here on The Thousand Acre Woods.  This is bittersweet for us all, as she leaves us, to be with her two children and her husband.  She was faced with a lot of tragedy in her life and I am happy to say her passing was not a tragic one.  As much as I will miss her I am at peace knowing she will get to be with her children now.

Be With Your Children
For Evelyn, My Grandma

All too often we find
this life can be anything but kind

Through suffering and strife
we learn the toughest lessons in life

But for just one soul
it seems too heavy a toll,
more than what's deemed fair
for just one woman to bear

To be robbed of a son
as well as a daughter
to have them ripped away
from both mother and father

She survived a life
most could not
absorbed the hurt
and the message it taught

"Continue to live
come what may"
because she knew life was fleeting
and could be so quickly taken away

Goodbye my Grandma
though this is not the end
I am at peace knowing
you are with your children once again.

Love, Jesse

Thank you for all the well wishes and kind thoughts you've sent our way.  They mean the world to us all, here on The Thousand Acre Woods.

Beauty Confessions... Neapolitan Crackle Nails

The other night my Momma and I went in to get pedicures.  I never seem to be able to get my toes as lovely as these girls do so it is such a treat!  While there I noticed that there were a few different hues of "crackle" polish in one of the cabinets.  Out of curiosity I ask Tommy (the owner of the salon) if a lot of people request this look?  His response stills cracks me up!  "No, no one like it 'cause it ugly... you take it with you" (  <----- insert an Asian accent for the full effect of hilariousness here)!  So I did!  I have been wanting to see what it was like and what type of cool and unusual concepts I could create with it.  I came up with this cute idea of painting my nails half brown and half pink then coating them with the white crackle polish to give the appearance of melted neapolitan ice cream.

♥ The Tools ♥
NYC Long Wearing Nail Enamel in Polyester Pink Creme
ELF Nail Polish in Smokey Brown
LaRosa Crackle Shatter in Snow White

I cannot say that the concept was well reflected by my attempts but the outcome was a fun one none the less!  I found that you really have to move fast with the stuff as the shatter process begins almost immediately upon application.  I cannot say I am quite sold on the crackle concept yet but maybe after some more experimentation I may find that it will change my mind.

Have you tried the crackle or shatter polishes?  What did you think?

Angel Falls & Blackberry Hauls...

When we first introduced Christina & Wes to Angel Falls there was a lot of excitement from the boys as we approached so of the most spectacular swimming holes.  Christopher Robin & Wes joked that they were going to take their chances with us girls and stop the shoot in favor of a late afternoon swim.  Didn't happen, but both boys were a bit disappointed.   Christina & I decided to arrange another trip to cut loose and let the boys have their fun.

While we waited from them to arrive we scouted out the best places to find the wild blackberries we had sampled on our first visit.

After receiving a text from a traffic delayed Christina & Wes we ventured over to the bushes to begin raiding the vines of their fruit.

The guys were such troopers as they ventured higher and higher into the thicket to capture only the best berries.

I had to snap a quick pic of our friend Jason's hands!  haha  The problem with berry picking?  You'll always be caught red handed!

Once we had collect all we could reach we headed back to the pools for some swimming and relaxing with our late arriving friends.

Where I took full advantage of being the class clown and get everyone laughing...

which at one point landed me (literally) in deep water dress and all!

It was quite refreshing I must say!  haha  It was the nicest way to beat the heat while gathering up the main ingredient for some upcoming treats!
